With its gleaming marquee and mirrored lobby, the Desoto Theatre was the pride of Downtown Rome for nearly 50 years, but, since the cinema shut-down in the 1980s, the theater has fallen into disrepair.
To restore it back to its former glory, the Desoto Theatre Foundation has been hard at work raising money for renovation. Much of their restoration is already underway, with new theater seats due in before year’s end.
“The seats are historically accurate for the period of the theater. And, they’re gorgeous---they’re going to be theater red.” Desoto’s Michelle Picon says. “It’s going to very exciting to have such a nice venue----a restored venue, because we had a nice venue, but it will be restored. It will be clean. It will be comfortable. It will have modern conveniences.”
Their current fundraising campaign actually lets you name one of those seats. For $500, you can immortalize yourself or a loved one with a plaque underneath it.
More renovation projects are in the works for Desoto, and depending on the capital raised, they hope to also refurbish the theater’s acoustics and stage.
