UPDATE: Shorter Avenue Reopens After Gas Leak

Oct 10, 2012 -- 4:28pm

By: Kevin Karel (WRGA News)

A gas leak described as "major" by an official with the Rome Fire Department led to the shut down of all four lanes of traffic on Shorter Avenue for about 90 minutes on Wednesday afternoon.

The leak occurred under the sidewalk off Shorter Avenue in between the 'Teriyaki Passion' and 'Moe's' restaurants.  The previous report about the leak occurring at the construction site for the new 'Dunkin Donuts' retail store was incorrect.

The gas leak is believed to have started about 4 pm, when 9-1-1 dispatch was notified.  The leak temporarily closed Shorter Avenue from Horseleg Creek Road to Carter Avenue North-East, and forced Rome policemen to divert traffic through the Mid-Town Crossing shopping center.

The accident happened as workers were digging for a fiber-optic line.
