A pair of Rome residents is back in Floyd County to face Murder charges in connection with the death of an elderly man last month, despite the efforts of the accused killers to escape capture by heading to Michigan.

Police reports indicate Laura Ann Payne, age 33, and her boyfriend Edward Eugene Gaines, age 36, were booked into the Floyd County Jail Wednesday after being extradited from Detroit, where they were arrested two weeks ago on Murder and other charges by a variety of law enforcement agencies.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Fugitive Task Force joined agents from the U.S. Marshal’s service and officers from the Wayne County, Michigan Sheriff’s Office in locating Payne and Gaines, who are accused of killing Jozell Payne, the 76-year-old father of the female suspect, who was found dead inside his Callier Springs Road home back on October 18th.

Local police labeled Payne’s death suspicious shortly after discovering his body, and sent his remains to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.

The two suspects face a number of other felony charges including False Imprisonment, Theft By Taking and crimes stemming from Gaines’ failure to register himself as a sex offender. After the victim’s death, the two allegedly stole his car, pistols and credit card.
