The Rome Alcohol Control Commission this week directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance that would give the commission authority to levy fines on businesses that sell alcohol to underage patrons.

Current policy allows the Rome Commission to suspended or revoke licenses to sell or pour alcoholic beverages for a violation, but city commissioner Buzz Wachsteter says the proposed ordinance change would grant discretionary authority for the commission to give out fines.

“Other cities have done this,” said Wachsteter who serves as Vice-chair of the ACC. “The fee or fine can be in addition to or instead of a revocation or suspension of a license.”

City commissioners have the final say so on what severity of punishment a business would face. The ordinance change could be voted on as early as next Monday during the commission’s regular session.
