Governor Nathan Deal called for a State of Emergency in both Bartow and Gordon Counties after a tornado ravaged homes and businesses and left hundreds without power.
After devastating downtown Adairsville, the F-2 twister set its fatal sight on Gordon county, causing extensive damage to buildings in both Calhoun and Sonoraville. Emergency Management Director Richard Cooper says at least eight people were injured in the county.
“We’ve had reports of eight total injuries, two of which are critical. They’ve been transported up to Erlanger Hospital for treatment,” Cooper says. “It started south of HWY 53 right around the Bartow County line and continued north all the way past Red Bud Rd. Several homes have been damaged or destroyed, including a lot of chicken houses.”
Over 5,000 people are reportedly without power in Northwest Georgia, and North Georgia Electric Membership Corporation estimates that 100 power poles will need to be replaced in Gordon. They advise customers to prepare for an extended outage.
Gordon County Schools are closed Thursday, with schools in Sonoraville estimating that they will not have power before Thursday afternoon.
