An Adairsville woman who was injured in last week’s tornado has died, but the circumstances surrounding her death appear to be a matter of debate.
WSB-TV in Atlanta spoke to family members of the now deceased Brenda Mulkey, who said Mulkey was struck in her home by falling trees last Wednesday in Adairsville. A neighbor told Channel 2 that Mulkey had sustained a major back injury which crushed three disks and “crushed her back bone into her tailbone.” However, medical personnel familiar with the victim said Mulkey suffered only a laceration to her head in the storm, but was known to have a multitude of unrelated health problems.
Mulkey died at her home, not at a hospital, and according to Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton, died of natural causes. A death related to the tornado would require the coroner’s office to be notified, which, Guyton says, they were not.
Following the tornado Bartow Fire Chief and EMA Director Craig Millsap stated that other than the death of Anthony Raines, no other Bartow resident had suffered anything beyond a minor injury from the storm.
