Officials with the City of Rome have confirmed that a major agreement has been reached between the developer of the West Third Street hotel project and a major hotel brand.
According to Rome City Manager John Bennett, Duke Hospitality reached an agreement with Courtyard by Marriott and construction is expected to begin by year’s end.
“It wasn’t totally unexpected, but Marriott has granted a franchise agreement to the developers of the project we’ve been talking about for maybe 4 years. We expect closing on the property by next Friday, March 8.”
The hotel layout would be the same as most other Courtyard by Marriott hotels with the exception of the lobby and parking lot. Bennett says that upon closing on the property, the developer will have a finite time to get started with construction.
“The agreement with them is that they have to begin construction by the end of this year, but right now I think they anticipate September or October might be a good time to be thinking about.”
A new hotel on the West Third Street site could be complete by late 2014. The hotel is just one of many redevelopment projects on the West Third corridor, including the newly renovated Barron Stadium and revitalized streetscape.
