A Floyd County woman and her boyfriend have been convicted with murder in the grisly death of a two-year-old child.
Facing a nine count indictment, Heather Brittany Parker, age 22, and Eric Castro, age 28, were found guilty Thursday on multiple charges including murder and 1st degree cruelty to children.
Court records claim that two-and-a-half-year-old Kailee Marie Parker suffered severe and prolonged abuse at the hands of her mother and Castro. An autopsy revealed the child sustained major head injuries, which led to her death on June 25th of last year, says Assistant District Attorney Kay Ann Wetherington.
“It became apparent very soon that the child had been beaten severely, primarily on the face, neck, shoulders and back,” Wetherington says. “An autopsy revealed the child had severe head injuries. She had multiple blows to the head that were inflicted with extremely violent force. She was beaten very badly.”
Both Wetherinton and DA Leigh Patterson thanked jurors and investigators for their commitment to what was undoubtedly a difficult and gruesome case.
“Everybody that was involved in this case, from the Floyd County Police Department, to the Assistant District Attorney---they all worked very well together to bring this case to a closed,” Patterson says.”
“I think the thing that kept them going was the fact that this was a baby. This little girl was 2 ½ years old. She had a very good life with another family that loved her and cared for her. When Castro and Parker took her back into the home, her life was never the same after that. She was battered. She was bruised. She was beaten.
I’m so glad this team worked so hard to get some justice for this baby,” Patterson says.
At their sentencing next week, both Castro and Parker could face a lifetime in prison without the chance of parole.
