Rome Police Officer James P. Mooney was murdered over 100 years ago, but, each year, a white flower is still placed atop the memorial he shares with the 18 other fallen Floyd County law enforcement officers.
Under an overcast sky Friday, GBI Director Vernon Keenan read the names of the nineteen men at the annual Peace Officer’s Memorial Service. Floyd County Commissioner Rhonda Wallace called spoke of their fierce and heroic commitment to duty.
“These officers gave their lives so that many of us could live stronger, safer and in a better world,” she said in her welcome to the audience. “The officers were heroes before they were tragically taken from us, and they remain heroes today.”
The fallen officers hail from several agencies--- the Floyd County Sherriff’s Office, all the way to the U.S. Secret Service.
