If you’re around Floyd County this week, you just might bump into a celebrity.
Dreamworks’ new major motion picture “Need for Speed” will be filmed in Rome and Floyd County this week, beginning May 15th. The film, which stars Michael Keaton and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, follows an ex-con who embarks on a cross-country car race.
Chris Cannon with the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau says the movie will feature three Floyd County locations.
“They’re actually shutting down the entire south bypass, from Highway 27 to Blacks Bluff Rd—--they’ll be filming out there. They’ll also be filming on Cave Spring Rd and at Myrtle Hill Cemetery,” Cannon says. “When they shoot at Myrtle Hill, they’ll be shooting a funeral scene. They’re actually digging a hole, and we expect some of the actors to be there at that scene.”
The filming of “Devil’s Knot” in Cartersville last year had a substantial impact on Bartow County’s economy. With a crew of around 100 staying in-town for five days, Cannon says to expect a similar boost here.
“This is going to be very significant. They’ve been very great to work with, because they’re trying to keep all the money local. They’re going with our local restaurants, our local rental units, our local prop company---all of the money is staying here in Floyd County,” he says.
The only downside is the road closings.
The Rome Bypass from Highway 27 to Blacks Bluff Road will be closed from Thursday, May 16th to Saturday, May 18th.
On Thursday Pennington Avenue near Myrtle Hill Cemetery will be closed from noon to 6pm. Also on Thursday, Cave Spring Road near Bagwell Road will see minor traffic delays, as cars will be temporarily stopped while filming takes place.
‘Need for Speed’ has a tentative release date of spring 2014.
