Former State Senator Nathan Dean passed away Saturday morning. He was 79.
Senator Dean served the 31st District, which includes Polk, Haralson, and portions of Bartow and Paulding, for over 20 years.
Born in 1934 in Rockmart, Dean was a city councilman and a Georgia State House member until his election to the senate in 1974. His time in the capital was fruitful; he was named Senator of the Year by the Georgia Municipal Association and served as chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus.
Dean was also a prolific community member, serving in the Rockmart, Cedartown and Cartersville Chamber of Commerce and the Northwest Council of Boyscouts. He was a major proponent of the Nathan Dean Sports Complex in Rockmart, which was named in his honor.
Freeman Harris Funeral Home in Rockmart has charge of his funeral arrangements, which have not yet been announced.
