A Gordon County man lost his life over the weekend when he was struck by train.
According to Deputy Coroner Heath Derryberry, the accident occurred a quarter mile north of railroad crossing on Sugar Valley Rd. early Saturday, where he says 50-year-old Terry Allen Wheat was sitting on the tracks when he was struck. Investigators do not know why Wheat did not move away from the oncoming train, but they do not suspect suicide.
Wheat’s death marks the third train fatality Northwest Georgia has seen this year. On June 20th, 29-year-old Michael Wayne King was killed in Rockmart when he stepped in-front of a train on Hogue Ave. Just a month before that in May, a 16-year-old boy playing chicken on some train tracks in Rome lost his life to an oncoming engine.
