It wasn’t quite the ‘Opening Night’ pageantry that will consume the state over Labor Day Weekend, but a number of local high school football teams played the first game of their 2013 schedules last night and ushered in the beginning of the highly anticipated season.

No team was more impressive than Darlington on Friday night, which rode a huge effort from its offense to a 50-6 stomping of visiting Murphy, North Carolina High. The Tigers are home again next week when they welcome one of the top teams in the state in the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes.

Whitfield County was home to a thrilling triple-overtime game Friday night as visiting Ringgold got a rare win against Dalton 33-27. The Tigers were able to overcome a 4th quarter deficit to send it to OT and won it off a touchdown run from QB Slade Dale. Ringgold had not beaten Dalton since 1983 and had dropped 27 in a row to the Catamounts overall before Friday night’s win. Dalton still leads the all-time series 43-2 but Friday’s loss certainly stings.

Elsewhere the Temple Tigers got shutout by the Walker School 21-0 Friday evening in a non-region game, while Villa Rica beat Woodland soundly by a 27-3 final score in what was a region contest.

This coming Friday August 30th is considered the first full week of the 2013 high school football schedule. Local powers such as Rome, Calhoun, Cartersville and East Paulding will all begin their seasons that evening.
