Two previously furloughed teacher work days have been added back to the Floyd County School System’s 2013-14 academic calendar.
The good news came at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, where Superintendent Jeff McDaniel reported the two days would be given back to teachers in 2014. And, that wasn’t the only exciting announcement he had to share.
“Currently for this year, students are missing five days of instruction,” McDaniel says. “Next year, they will miss at minimum three days of instruction, because the two we’re giving back now will go to teacher work days in 2014, but in 2015, starting July 1st of next year, we’re going to make those instructional days and bring those two days back.”
Teachers can expect to see those days paid in-full on their November paychecks.
An added bonus to this for Superintendent McDaniel is that he will see a little over a $1,000 extra into his own pocket. As part of his freshly extended contract, McDaniel receives a pay incentive for every furlough day he eliminates. The amount is based on his salary and is relatively equal to a daily wage.
Floyd County Board members were also treated to a musical performance of 'This Land is Your Land' by 3rd graders at Garden Lakes Elementary.
