The Social Security Office in Rome was the latest victim of copper thieves who caused significant damage to the building’s air conditioner.

According to a Rome Police report, an officer responded to the location on Riverside Parkway Monday to the report of damage to the property. Thieves allegedly stole copper wiring and tubing from eight air conditioning units sometime over the past weekend.

The complainant at the social security office stated to police that surveillance footage showed one person prowling around one of the air units, however no arrests have been made and the security tape was not immediately available to investigators.

Police estimate the total damage to all the air units totals in excess of $6,000. The unknown culprit will likely face felony charges of theft and criminal damage to property.
