The Rome-Floyd County Water & Sewer Department has self-reported two additional sewage spills in local waterways, bringing the total to four within the last week.

According to the Sewer Division, the latest spill occurred Wednesday morning at 8:15 when about 26,000 gallons of sewage was dumped into the Oostanaula River in Ridge Ferry Park behind the Amphitheater. The incident followed a Tuesday morning spill around 10:45 am when 18,000 gallons of sewage poured into Burwell Creek in the area of Wolf Drive at the entrance to Rome High School.

Officials blame the two most recent spills, as well as one last week on a trunk main which was part of a system bypass at the Floyd County Jail. A collection of snack bags, rags and grease in the main was also blamed, though Water Department officials say the main has been cleaned and the spills corrected. The Water Reclamation Facilities Lab is now monitoring the stream.

The two other recent spills took place on Wednesday January 2nd and Friday January 4th. Within the last week a combined 48,000 gallons of sewage is estimated to have been dumped into local waterways as a result of the spills.
