It may seem sort of macabre, but Myrtle Hill Cemetery has become a popular tourist spot in Rome.
It’s so popular in fact that the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau is mixing technology with good old fashioned storytelling to bring cemetery visitors a novel experience.
An app that guides tourists through the historic cemetery will be released for mobile devices on May 3rd. Chris Cannon, spokesman for the visitor’s bureau, explains what the mobile tour offers.
“It is essentially a guided tour—--guided through GPS. It takes you to about 65 different sites. Overall we cover almost 2,000 people. It really is a wonderful tour,” Cannon says. “It has photos; both historical and of the grave so you know you have the right grave. But, then it dives into that person’s life and that site---and it tells you everything you’d ever want to know about it through audio.”
The application will be available for IPhone, Android and IPad.
