East Central Elementary welcomed a special visitor this week.
First Lady of Georgia Sandra Deal stopped by the school Thursday morning to read to the children there as part of her Read Across Georgia Initiative.
East Central is just one stop on her tour promoting literacy across the state. According to data compiled by the Governor’s office, children who cannot read at a third grade level while in the third grade are more likely to drop out of school and go to prison.
Mrs. Deal, who taught school before her husband assumed the office, believes education is key to maintaining a healthy Georgia.
“I’ve always loved school and always loved children. I think school is the way to get children out of poverty, and to help make our state stronger, because we need good, well-trained workers. It doesn’t do us any good to bring in jobs and not have people trained to fill them,” she told WRGA at November’s Can-A-Thon. “I feel like it’s very important for us to stress education and the need for children to learn to read and learn their math skills so that they can become productive citizens.”
On her tour, Mrs. Deal hopes to visit every school district in Georgia over the next two years.
