The body of a Plainville man who fled from Gordon authorities into floodwaters has been recovered across the county-line.
According to a prepared statement from Sherriff Mitch Ralston, the body of 50-year-old Jeffery Couch was found Saturday afternoon in a flooded area off of Thomas Bluff Rd. in Floyd County.
Gordon Sheriff’s Deputies believe Couch was one of two suspects who fled from them at a traffic stop in Plainville on Tuesday night. A brief car chase led them to Thomas Bluff Rd., where the suspect’s truck travelled into impassible flood water. Their vehicle stalled, both suspects emerged and were told to leave the water. The passenger obeyed, but the driver, who is believed to be Couch, swam off into the night.
On Friday, Couch’s family members contacted authorities, believing their missing relative was involved in the police chase. Multiple local agencies have been combing the area ever since.
Couch’s body has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsy.
Authorties are unsure as to why Couch fled from them.
