A former Floyd County Magistrate judge accused of swindling thousands began his jury-trial today.
48-year-old Chris Mathis is facing a 52-count indictment for his involvement in an alleged cattle business scam. According to court administrator Phil Hart, Mathis allegedly took money from his victims under the guise he was buying livestock, but instead pocketed the cash.
Some of the charges in that lengthy indictment include several felony counts of thefts by taking, 1st degree forgery, and a violation of his office.
Mathis was elected to his chair in 2004 and maintained it until his resignation in May of 2010.
Chattooga County attorney Steven Miller will be representing Mathis
