A structure fire at an abandoned home Monday afternoon was likely caused by arson according to Rome-Floyd County fire officials.
The blaze was called in by a passerby around 3:30 p.m. at 834 Barker Road SW, a home long abandoned but one which vagrants could be using for shelter.
Fire Department Battalion Chief Phil Litton says the fire originated on the first floor of the two-story home, in the rear of the structure which Litton says gives further credence to it being a case of arson;
"It was where it started." As for who could be a suspect Litton said "All possibilities are open."
Litton claims several arsons have been investigated in the area within the past two months.
There were no injuries involved with the incident.
