NAMI Walk raises funds for Elevation House
November 4, 2018--2:00 a.m.
The chilly temperatures Saturday morning didn’t stop around 200 area residents from walking for a cause that touches many lives.
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Rome held its 2018 Roam N Rome walk to raise awareness about mental illness and to raise funds for Elevation House.
Elevation House will be a clubhouse in Rome which will provide support in a recovery-focused environment.
“We plan to start this thing up in the spring of next year,” according to Don Scuvotti, coordinator of the startup group for Elevation House. “It’s going to be a place of community and support. Jobs, housing and education are all going to be paramount. We plan on helping to reignite dreams. A lot of times, people who live with mental illness become isolated and along the way, they lose sight of their dreams. Sometimes they even give up on those dreams. We want to bring that hope back.”
The goal for this year’s walk is $60,000. As of Saturday evening, around $40,000 in donations had been received.
The walk is not just about raising money, it’s about raising awareness.
Mental illness is a physical illness and, with proper recognition and treatment, individuals can live in recovery.
By raising awareness, organizers of the event hope to combat the stigma associated with mental illness.
