Georgia Highlands College nursing students take on emergency drill

The Floyd County Police Department and other emergency personnel assisted with simulated disaster training at the Heritage Hall campus of Georgia Highlands College on Wednesday.

The exercise was planned training event to provide life-like scenarios to students for the college of nursing.

"It opened my eyes to how a disaster might unfold." Jackie Gentry, a nursing student at Georgia Highlands College, spoke about the event. "I was assigned to the triage area.... We seemed to know what we were doing, I thought"

Julie Hak, another Georgia Highlands College nursing student, also spoke about the experience "It gave me an insight into what a disaster looks like and that the descisions you make do matter." She shared that she would be open to taking part in another drill.

Esther VanSteenberg, a student who acted as a victim in the drill stated, 'It was fantastic to see all the different entities come together and work together in the chaos to get things done."
