Man charged with child cruelty

A Rome man was arrested Thursday on two counts each of 1st and 2nd-degree cruelty to children.

According to Floyd County Jail records, 50-year old Shawn Sanders Owens of a Chulio Road address was under the influence of alcohol to the point where he could not be awakened by two children (ages 2 and 3) that he was supposed to be supervising.

The report states that a neighbor found one of the children playing within three feet of a busy roadway.

Owens was also found in possession of a bag of pills suspected to be tramadol and a Winchester 30-30.

He was additionally charged with reckless conduct, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drugs not in the original container and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
