Fire continues to burn at Rome-Floyd Recycling Center

073114 5:50 p.m.

Rome-Floyd firefighters are still on the scene this morning of a blaze at the Rome Floyd Recycling Center on Watters Street, using tractors and water to control the blaze and move through the wet debris.

The fire began last night. It is the second cardboard fire there in the past two weeks. Another cardboard fire was reported on North Broad Street near the railroad tracks.

The fire last week was ruled an arson.

Last year, there were six fires at the Recycling Center in nine days. But those stopped once a temporary construction fence was put up on the site, according to Floyd County Public Works Director Michael Skeen.

Security has been a concern at the North Rome facility.
SPLOST funds have been designated to help renovate the main building, warehouse, and install a concrete border fence.
