Floyd County Prison inmate killed while on work detail in Cartersville
December 26, 2018--6:20 p.m.
The man killed in an accident on Jones Street Wednesday has been identified as 43-year-old Lester Robert Baker.
Floyd County Prison Warden Mike Long said that Baker was from the Cartersville area.
Long said that Baker was transported to the Cartersville Medical Center approximately 8 minutes after the accident occurred.
He was pronounced dead at 2 p.m.
Baker was a low-security inmate with just a short time left on his sentence.
He entered the Floyd County Prison in November 2018.
The Floyd County Prison has work release contracts with both Cartersville and Bartow County Public Works. Extra personnel was needed today due to increased trash from the Christmas Holiday.
Inmates have worked in this community for approximately 5 years.
Warden Long said Baker had experience working with the garbage trucks. He specialized in working with heavy equipment.
A state inmate was fatally injured while working with the Cartersville Sanitation Department Wednesday.
The accident occurred just after 1 p.m.
A prisoner from the Floyd County Prison was riding on the back of a garbage truck at Jones and Church Street.
The inmate was pinned to a utility pole as the truck backed down Jones Street and sideswiped the pole.
The victim’s identity will be released pending notification of his family.
No charges were filed.
Officials with the Georgia State Patrol say once completed, the case will be given to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
