Cause of man's death at Chattooga County Jail still not known

Forty-six-year-old Joey Boyd passed away after collapsing at the Chattooga County Jail on January 23rd. Chattooga County Coroner Earl Rainwater told AM 1180 this week that it could be some time before the exact cause of death is known.
Boyd was picked up by the Summerville Police Department and taken to jail on some traffic violations. While Boyd was at the jail he began to complain of not feeling well, and moments later collapsed. Sheriff Mark Schrader told AM 1180 that the jail staff immediately began to work with Mr. Boyd. As jail staff attempted to stabilize Mr. Boyd other staff called Redmond EMS who responded and took Boyd to a Redmond Hospital where he passed away later that afternoon.
Sheriff Schrader said that even though the cause of death was medical in nature, he wanted the incident to be investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Coroner Earl Rainwater says that with the backlog of cases with the Georgia Crime Lab, it could be six to eight weeks – or possibly longer – before a report is released.
