Alabama teen killed in wreck

A sophomore at Cherokee County High School was fatally injured in a single vehicle accident Saturday night on Alabama Highway 411 South just outside of Leesburg.

Cherokee County 911 received a call at approximately 9:43 p.m. reporting that a vehicle had left the roadway near Pine Cone Campground.

The 2008 Honda left the roadway and struck a tree. According to Cherokee County Coroner Dr. Jeremy Deaton the victim has been identified as 16 year old Nathan Shane Pittman. a sophomore at Cherokee County High School. Deaton said that Pittman was extricated from the vehicle by rescue personnel and transported to Floyd Cherokee Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Deaton.

Deaton said that Pittman was wearing a seat belt at the time of crash

The Cherokee County Rescue Squad, Leesburg and Centre Fire Departments, Floyd EMS, Leesburg Police, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputies and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency responded.
ALEA and the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office are investigating the crash.
According to a post on the official Cherokee County High School Facebook page, grief counselors will be on campus to help students and faculty cope with the loss.
