First-time claims for unemployment up in December

Floyd County ended 2020 with an increase in first-time claims for unemployment insurance.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, there were 1,749 claims filed in December, which is up from 990 in November and 1.099 in December of 2019.

Bartow County reported 2,650 claims last month, up from 1,209 the month before and 665 in December of last year.

1,529 Gordon County residents filed initial claims in December, up from 702 in November and 772 in December of 2019.

Polk County had 711 claims, up from 372 the previous month and the 360 filed this time last year.

Meanwhile, Chattooga reported 150 claims, up from 79 over the month but down from 266 over the year.

Despite the increase in jobless claims, the Rome area did gain 400 jobs over the month and year.
