According to a report by the Rome News-Tribune, Floyd County and Rome city commissioners recently stated they don’t want to split the parks and recreation department.
Disagreement arose over budgets and fairness in West Rome’s parks. Recent elections changed the city commission’s stance, reducing the desire to split.
City Commissioner Jamie Doss emphasized the need to collaborate, a sentiment echoed by County Commissioner Scotty Hancock. They’re reviving a 10-year parks and recreation master plan, previously paused. The plan was deemed pointless if the department split.
Mayor Craig McDaniel and Commission Chair Allison Watters expressed readiness to finalize the plan. It’s about 80% complete and expected by summer, according to Parks Director Todd Wofford. The plan will guide future decisions.
Community parks’ importance was stressed by officials, citing the lack of parks in new housing areas. They proposed using zoning or tax incentives to include parks in developments. However, County Manager Jamie McCord cautioned against this, fearing increased regulations and higher home prices.
Officials anticipate significant regional growth, emphasizing the need for parks and recreation planning.
