Team from St. Mary’s School wins math competition

A team of “Mathletes” from St. Mary’s Catholic School won the regional finals of the MATHCOUNTS competition, which was sponsored by the Northwest Chapter of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers.

The winning team members include eighth graders Sarah Beth Bushnell, Abby Kate Jackson, Andrew Parsa, and Gray Smith.

Coach Kelly Armstrong led the team to victory. Other schools represented were Calhoun City Middle, Dalton Junior High, Hammond Creek Middle, Heritage Middle, and Model Middle.

The competition was held on Friday, February 23rd at Georgia Power Company’s operating headquarters in Floyd County.

The second and third-place teams were Hammond Creek Middle and Model Middle respectively. The top individual scorer was Toby Swanagan from Model Middle. Second place was awarded to Gage Ford of Heritage Middle. Grace Qian from Calhoun City Middle won third place.

MATHCOUNTS is a national mathematics coaching and competition program and is nationally sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. It is designed to increase enthusiasm for and advance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States.
