The Floyd County Commission has approved a rezoning application for a funeral home at 5865 New Calhoun Highway.

Tyler Reynolds has been operating a funeral home at the location for about a year.

The change in zoning from Community Commercial to Heavy Commercial will allow him to offer cremation services.

“It’s not that big, it will just be a 20×20 garage on the backside of the funeral home with a retort in that garage,” Reynolds said. “It’s not noticeable and it’s not going to be able to be seen from the road—just easy access in with a roll-up garage door. It will be something very simple, subtle, and quiet there in the corner of the county.”

Freddie Stewart spoke in favor of the application.

“Cremation is affordable,” he told the commission. “I know how it works because I’ve had a couple of family members who passed away, and I know the ridiculous amount of money that some people can’t afford. There are people in this county who are below the poverty line and cannot afford the payments of a burial.”

The vote to approve was unanimous.
