The Floyd County Commission held the first of three public hearings regarding a proposed property tax rate increase on Tuesday.
The proposed rate is advertised at 9.414 mills, which would be an increase of 0.75 mills, although the board could opt to adopt a lower rate.
A reduction in the millage rate last year along with a one-time increase in the homestead exemption by the state has resulted in Floyd County having a budget deficit of $3.6 million.
The second public hearing is scheduled for July 23 at 8 a.m. while the third and final hearing is July 23 at 6 p.m.
