Kamala Harris officially accepted her party’s nomination for president during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago Thursday night, and in Rome, local Democrats gathered to watch her acceptance speech.
“This is a new generation,” said Bishop Norris K. Allen. “I feel we have a leader that will carry us down the road like we have never seen before.”
Cate Mendes also liked the vice president’s message.
“I think it’s really important to see how our candidate is reaching across to all Americans,” she said. “It’s really clear that her vision is to help every single person, no matter what their background is.”
Candidates running for local office also attended the watch party.
They included Shawn Harris, who is running for Congress in the 14th District, and State House candidate Kevin Aronhalt.
“The biggest thing that I have noticed is the work that everybody has been doing from the bottom of the ballot all the way up to the top with the messaging of freedom, responsibility, and working together,” Aronhalt said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat or a Republican. You can feel it. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but that’s what is driving this.”
Organizers of the watch party said attendance was about three times what they had expected.
Election Day is just 74 days away.
