WRGA Staff Reports –
Update:
Tropical Cyclone Helene is expected to roll through the region Thursday and Friday.
However, before Helene arrives we need to be aware of the potential for Flash Flooding in northern Georgia on Wednesday and Wednesday night.
The potential for a Predecessor Rain Event was noted a day or so ago, and it is looking like one may occur (or something similar).
PREs are notorious for heavy rainfall and flooding well in advance of a tropical cyclone which catches people off guard, especially when they are focused on the location of a tropical cyclone.
If you live in Atlanta or North Georgia please be aware that the risk for flooding in your area will begin to ramp up Wednesday.
Previously posted:
According to Floyd County Emergency Management’s Tim Herrington, Tropical Storm Helene is expected to intensify into a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) earlier than anticipated for Northwest Georgia.
While Helene’s effects are not expected until Thursday night into the early morning hours, the community should prepare for possible severe weather conditions.
Weather Forecast:
• Wednesday: Expect scattered showers with periods of heavy rain up to 2 inches in the afternoon. These showers are unrelated to Tropical Storm Helene.
• Thursday Night – Friday Morning: As Helene makes landfall, potential hazards include heavy rainfall, flash flooding, strong winds, power outages, and downed trees.
Preparation and Safety:
Residents are encouraged to take precautions by securing outdoor items, preparing for power outages, and monitoring WRGA weather updates.
