A former teacher with the Floyd County School System has been arrested and charged with three counts of felony 1st-degree cruelty to children.
According to the arrest warrants:
Between September 2 and September 13, 51-year-old Lynn Katherine Allen Mitchell rolled a 4-year-old, special needs, non-verbal child in a blanket because he would not lie down for a nap. She then stepped on the blanket to keep the child restrained. The child tried to escape, but when he got an arm out, Mitchell would forcefully place his arm back under the blanket. The child was hysterical and hyperventilating when another adult walked in and took over the child’s care.
On September 25, Mitchell picked up a different 4-year-old special needs child by the collar of his shirt, moved him about 10 to 15 feet, and then slammed him onto a mat because that child would not lie down for a nap.
Then on October 22, Mitchell restrained a third 4-year-old special needs child by wrapping him tightly in a blanket, once again, because the child would not lie down for a nap. Just like with the first child, she stepped on the blanket to prevent the victim from getting up before another adult came in and suggested she could take care over the care of the victim.
All three incidents occurred at Alto Park Elementary School on Burnett Ferry Road.
According to Floyd County School Superintendent Glenn White, Mitchell is no longer employed with the school system as of last Friday.
As of Thursday, Mitchell remained in the Floyd County Jail with bond set at $15,000.
