Two private citizens and a Rome-Floyd County firefighter were honored for their heroic actions following a serious wreck on November 8.

The crash occurred near Wilbanks Road and seriously injured Restoration Lindale founder Tim Reynolds.

Rome Assistant Police Chief Rodney Bailer presented Benjamin Woodall and Jeremiah Veillon with the Citizen Award for Extraordinary Bravery and Selfless Heroism.

“Upon witnessing a severe vehicle crash, Mr. Woodall and Mr. Veillon immediately got out of their cars and went to the scene, where one of the vehicles was engulfed in flames,” Bailey said. “Without hesitation or regard for their own safety, they rushed to the vehicle, made entry, and placed themselves in imminent danger to rescue an entrapped driver. Through their decisive and fearless actions, they played a pivotal role in saving the life of a fellow citizen.”

Woodall is a teacher and coach at Model High School while Veillon is the vice principal and the Floyd County College and Career Academy.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Brian Minshew with the Rome-Floyd County Fire Department had just left his home and was headed to the training center when he saw the crash.

“Along with Mr. Woodall and the other citizen, they all went into action, and saved the life of a man, who definitely would have perished had it not been for those three,” said Rome-Floyd County Fire Chief Troy Brock. “He was knocked unconscious and they had to get him out of his truck, and it was on fire. In fact, it is my understanding that as soon as they got him to the ground, the cab became engulfed.”

Brock presented Minshew the Lifesaving Award, which only goes to those who go above and beyond the call of duty.
