One of the workers, identified as James Rayburn, a City of Rome Water and Sewer Division employee, succumbed to his injuries.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

The City of Rome has released the following statement:

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear colleague, James Rayburn, a valued member of our Water Department. Rayburn, as he is affectionately known, tragically sustained a fatal injury late last night while working on a city water project. Michael Walters who was working with him also sustained minor injuries. During this incredibly difficult time, we ask that our community respect the privacy of Rayburn’s family and friends, as well as Michael Walters and his coworkers, as we grieve the loss of such a cherished individual. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with them as we all mourn together.
