Snow and sleet in Northwest Georgia, travel is hazardous

Area roads remain slick at this time. Precipitation started as sleet, then snow, then a wintry mix. More precipitation is on the way. In addition, the slush that is covering the roadways will likely refreeze later this evening as temperatures drop below freezing.

Statement from the Rome Police Department and Floyd County Police Department (at 8:00 AM) : “Our roads are beginning to be covered in snow and ice in some areas. Please, if traveling is not imperative, stay off the roads! Stay home, stay warm. We anticipate that the roads will only get worse throughout the day, as the temperature will remain below freezing for some time.”

As of 8:20 AM Friday morning, Georgia Power is reporting no major power outages as a part of the winter weather in Northwest Georgia.

WRGA listeners first reported snow in Sherwood Forest, Chulio Road, Lyons Road, Burnett Ferry Road, Rosemont Park, Lindale, Coosa, Garden Lakes, and other parts of West Rome around 6:45 AM.  WRGA news reported sleet falling at our studios at 6:15 AM previously.

The Polk County Emergency Management Agency has reported that due to the ongoing snowfall, road conditions are rapidly deteriorating. For the safety of others, please avoid using the roadways until further notice. Refrain from travel unless absolutely necessary. Residents from the Jackson Chapel Road area and other parts of Cedartown and also in Rockmart have reported a decent amount of snow on the ground. In Rockmart specifically, WRGA has received reports at least 2 inches of snow on the ground.

Alan Sanders at WBHF Radio reported that snow is falling in downtown Cartersville. WRGA also received reports from listeners in Acworth that snow is piling up. Marcus Warren from Bartow County EMA recommends the public to stay at home.

Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston reported major snow accumulation on the roadways, with secondary roads also impacted. The Sheriff recommended that residents stay home or exercise extreme caution when traveling.

The Cherokee County Alabama Sheriff’s office has reported snow and is recommending residents to stay at home and avoid getting out on the road. WEIS Radio has reported that Cherokee County roads are impassable, all DeKalb County roads, Piedmont city roads, and Jacksonville city as well.

Paulding County GA Sheriff Ashley Henson is reporting lots of snow and is recommending that the community stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

Due to slick roads, Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader has recommended that residents avoid traveling if possible in Summerville, Trion, Lyerly, and Menlo. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, there are icy patches on State Route 48 in both directions at State Route 337/Seventh Avenue. All lanes are closed.

I-75 and Highway 41 are snow covered as shown on GDOT cameras in Emerson and Kennesaw

There is also snow and ice on I-75 in Gordon County up toward Resaca.
