There is a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) for flash flooding and river flooding in north Georgia between Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The potential exists for this risk to be increased to Moderate Risk (Level 3 of 4) with future forecast updates.
A Flood Watch has been issued for the region most at risk. Rain should begin Tuesday, with the heaviest rain expected Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night. Widespread rain amounts between 3 and 5″ (isolated totals near 7″) are expected by Thursday morning north of Interstate 20. There is also a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather in western Georgia between Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night.
WHAT:
· Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) for flash flooding and river flooding in north Georgia. (Flood Watch Issued)
· Widespread rain amounts between 3 and 5″ are expected north of Interstate 20, with isolated totals near 7″ possible.
· A second storm system may bring additional heavy rainfall to Georgia over the weekend.
· Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather in western Georgia.
· The severe risk is conditional, but if it develops a brief weaker tornado and/or a wind gust of 40 to 60 mph are the possible hazards.
WHERE & WHEN:
· The heaviest rainfall is expected north of Interstate 20 in the area covered by the Flood Watch.
· The flash flooding risk should peak Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night, while the river flood risk may linger into Thursday or Friday.
· Rain begins Tuesday and concludes Thursday, with the highest rain rates expected Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night.
· The severe potential is highest between Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night.
IMPACTS:
· River flooding is a growing concern, and minor flooding is already in the forecast for several rivers in north Georgia.
· Flash flooding will be a hazard for travelers, especially on Wednesday night (overnight flooding is more difficult to avoid).
· If severe weather develops, tree or powerline damage may occur.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE:
· High confidence in heavy rainfall across north Georgia
· Medium confidence in the occurrence of river flooding or flash flooding.
· Low confidence in the occurrence of severe weather.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
· A second storm system may bring more heavy rain and thunderstorms to Georgia over the weekend, and this will need to be monitored for its potential to exacerbate or cause additional flooding.
