Thornton, Hood headed to runoff in Floyd County Commission contest

The election to fill the vacant Post Four seat on the Floyd County Commission is headed to a runoff.

David Thornton (R) was the top vote-getter with 1,985 votes while Chip Hood (R) finished second with 1,359 votes.

Thornton and Hood will now head to a runoff on April 15, because neither received the 50 percent-plus one needed to win outright.

Shonna Bailey (D) finished third with 1,158 votes, followed by Tonya Eden Shepard (R) with 379 and Corey Townsend (R) with 335 votes.

5,228 of Floyd County’s 62,708 registered voters cast ballots in the election, which is a turnout of 8.34 percent.

In other election news around Northwest Georgia:

In Polk County, voters overwhelmingly said “No” to the Polk School District issuing $34 million in general obligation bonds to pay for renovations and improvements.

Cedartown voters said “No” to allowing the city to establish tax allocation districts.

The City of Fairmount has a new mayor and council member.

Jerry Mauldin defeated Shane Swift by a vote of 91-84 to win the mayoral contest.

Mike Young defeated Hunter Collett by a vote of 91 to 82 to win the Post One seat on the city council.
