The City of Rome is beginning the process of looking at different options for recreation outside of what is currently being done jointly with Floyd County.
Mayor Craig McDaniel has asked Commissioner Jamie Doss to participate in a financial feasibility study.
“He has also asked commissioners [Wayne] Robinson and [Mark] Cochran to be a part of the committee,” Doss said. “We are going to be looking at parks and rec. outside the box, and I expect to have some recommendations at the end.”
According to Mayor McDaniel, a second committee will be looking at recreation from another angle.
“Commissioner [Jim] Bojo’s committee, along with Commissioner [Bill] Collins and Commissioner Robinson, will be visiting some of the communities that have parks. They will come back with some ideas.”
During a planning retreat in January, Rome City Commissiones renewed talks to split with the county, to one degree or another, on parks and recreation services.
A 10-year parks and recreation master plan has been in the works for several years. Work on that plan was put on pause in 2022 after city commissioners expressed a desire to split the department.
