The Floyd County Commission has approved a 15 percent water rate increase.

Since the last increase, costs for the water department have gone up, in some cases dramatically.

“We did a lot of research over the last couple of years,” said Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord. “We were actually doing research in the fall of 2019 to do a rate increase, and for obvious reasons, we felt like that was not appropriate, considering the times. We spent a lot of time and effort looking at our financial information—the project CIP [Capital Improvement Plan], made some adjustments to the CIP, looked at residential water rates in surrounding areas and other locations, and came up with the recommendation.”

McCord stressed this does not mean they are looking at 15 percent increases over the next five years.

“We haven’t done an increase since 2014 and we do need to get caught back up with inflationary costs<” McCord added. “Again, the rates for residential will increase 15 percent; tap fees is roughly 18 percent. We rounded that up to the next whole dollar. So, the new rate will go from $3.75 per thousand to $4.31 per thousand, and for commercial, $3.12 per thousand to $3.40 per thousand. I will note that residential customers receive 2,000 gallons with the base fee.”

An average residential customer utilizing 5,000 gallons per month will see a rate increase of $3.92.

The new rates are set to take effect on April 1.
