-Staff reports-

It appears as though a second Floyd County wildfire was intentionally set.

On Tuesday, Rome-Floyd County firefighters responded to a number of grass and woods fires, including one at Chulio and Norton Road.

According to Fire Investigator Brenton Whatley, speaking during a news conference on Wednesday, he noticed several spot fires that had been set on the edge of the roadway that burned back toward the wood line.

“The way they were set made me believe they were intentionally set because they were not a continuous burn,” he said. “You would have one fire, and then about 20 or 30 yards down the road, there was another spot fire. Then in another half-a-mile, there was another that created the rest of the fire that burned the pastures and everything. There were about four or five of those spot fires that someone set.”

Authorities had previously determined that the wildfire at Highway 156 and Floyd Springs Road in the Rosedale area was intentionally set and warrants have been issued. That fire burned approximately 200 acres and endangered 35 to 40 homes. One outbuilding was destroyed and one home was damaged.

Floyd County Police Public Information Officer Mike Bell urged the public to report any suspicious activity related to past fires or reckless burning by contacting the Rome-Floyd Fire Department at (706) 236-4500.
