Firefighters responded to a structure fire on Dean Avenue Thursday morning.

According to Rome Floyd County Fire Department Division Chief Jamie Stone, crews arrived on the scene at 10:18 a.m. and found heavy flames coming from the second floor of the vacant two-story commercial building at 1511 Dean Avenue.

“A situation they did encounter was a partial collapse in the rearm of the structure prior to their arrival,” Stone said. “The damage estimated is going to be heavy. The cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. The building did not have a sprinkler system and it did not have smoke alarms.”

The fire was extinguished at 10:30 a.m.

Dean Avenue was closed while firefighters battled the blaze.

On Sunday, firefighters responded to a fire in the same building.

Stone said that there have been issues in the past with homeless staying in the structure, but it is not known if that contributed to Thursday’s fire.
