A couple of bills related to speed detection cameras in School Zones have passed in the Georgia House, but their fate in the State Senate appears less certain.

House Bill 225 would prohibit local governments or law enforcement agencies from using automated traffic enforcement safety devices altogether.

House Bill 651 would allow the devices but sets forth signage requirements, times of enforcement, and how the money from fines would be spent.

Both bills were referred to the Senate Public Safety Committee and were on the agenda for a committee meeting on Friday.

However, that meeting was canceled.

Both bills were withdrawn and recommitted to the Senate Rules Committee.

The last day of the 2025 session of the Georgia General Assembly is this Thursday.

There are currently two operational cameras in the Rome High School Zone on Veterans Memorial Highway and the Main Elementary School Zone on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

This spring, another will be operational in the West Central School Zone on Lavender Drive.

Floyd County has a camera in the Armuchee Primary School Zone on Highway 27 North; another is being considered for the Armuchee Elementary School Zone on Highway 140.
