The Floyd County Commission has approved a resolution to ask the state legislative delegation to introduce local legislation for Floyd County during the 2026 special session of the Georgia General Assembly to have a referendum to let voters decide a local homestead option sales tax.
The LHOST was created by the legislature during this past session and allows local counties and municipalities to levy a 1% sales tax dedicated entirely to subsidizing and reducing property taxes for homesteaded properties.
“An opportunity for voters to consider a different method to reduce the homestead property tax,” said Floyd County Attorney Chris Jackson. “This method is different from FLOST (floating option sales tax), which was what we gave an opportunity for the voters to consider, and of course, that did not pass. That was not just limited to homeowners. That was not limited to just homestead property. This tax relief—this tax shift would be a shift in favor of specifically home-owned properties that are primary residences.”
The special session under the Gold Dome starts next week.
Property assessments in the mail
Speaking of property taxes, the 2026 property assessment notices were mailed to all property owners today.
Each property listed will have 45 days from the date of posting to file an appeal on the value of the property.
The assessment notice will reflect the previous year’s value, the current year’s value, any special assessment values, as well as an estimated tax savings on any property where exemptions exist.
