On Friday (September 22nd) at about 4 AM, a man arrived at the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office and entered the Jail lobby, asking if the Office was open at that time.

The Jail desk officer told him the business office was closed and the man went back to the parking lot.

After returning to the lobby and back out to the parking lot again, the man produced a handgun and opened fire on a deputy sitting in a parked patrol car.

A second deputy fired a single shot at the man, who then got down on the ground and surrendered. He was taken into custody unhurt.

The suspect was not struck by gunfire from the deputy, and no deputies were struck by gunfire from the assailant.

The man was subsequently identified as 45-year-old Amara D. Toure of Calhoun.

Jail records indicate that Toure was arrested by Calhoun Police back on January 3rd, 2020 on charges of Aggravated Assault and Cruelty to Children.

Toure also had prior arrests in 2019 and 2018.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to conduct an independent investigation into the incident.
