Floyd County Commission meets Tuesday

The Floyd County Commission will hold public hearings for a number of rezoning requests and special use permits when they meet Tuesday.

A special use permit is being sought for a wedding and event venue at 965 Fosters Mill Road.

The Rome-Floyd County Planning Commission voted 9-0 to recommend approval with conditions that events be limited to private events and festivals and concerts would be prohibited.

A rezoning request and special use permit for 4567 Martha Berry Highway is also on the agenda.

If approved the property would go from Suburban Residential to Community Commercial for equipment sales.

There is also a rezoning request from Community Commercial to Light Industrial for property on Pierce Hill Road, as well as requests to rezone property on Calhoun Highway and 3329 Alabama Highway from Community Commercial to Suburban Residential.

The commission will also consider requests to rezone 1090 Mays Bridge Road, property on Kingston Highway, and 210 Harmony Road in Silver Creek from Suburban Residential to Agricultural Residential; as well as a portion of 5579 Cedartown Highway in Lindale from Community Commercial to Agricultural Residential, and 2006 Kingston Highway from Suburban Residential to Community Commercial.

In other action, the commission is expected to adopt a resolution related to a new state law that goes into effect July 1 regarding permits for public displays of fireworks or pyrotechnics.

“There is a board agenda request on that item to add the fee of $100 per application for a fireworks permit to our fee schedule,” said John Blaylock, Floyd County Public Safety Division Director. “These are for public displays of fireworks. These are not for bottle rockets in your backyard.”

Permits will be obtained through the fire department instead of the magistrate court.

The commission meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the county administration building on East Fourth Avenue.

During the caucus, which begins at 4 p.m., the commission will get an update from Highland Rivers and go into executive session to discuss property acquisition, litigation, and personnel.
