The City of Rome gets a clean audit review for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2023.

Christopher McKellar with Mauldin & Jenkins presented the audit results during Monday’s Rome City Commission meeting.

“We did issue an unmodified or clean opinion, which means that the financial statements present fairly in all material respects,” he said.

McKellar went over some of the financial highlights.

“The net position for the governmental activities did increase approximately $5 million,” he said.  “The business type-activities proprietary funds increased approximately $178 million, although a large portion of was related to the settlement received during the fiscal year. So, that is not something that you’ll get every year.”

He also highlighted general fund revenues and expenses.

“Taxes make up approximately 84% of all general fund revenues,” McKellar said. “For general fund expenditures, the general government is approximately 32%, public safety is 38%, and then public works is 24%. So, that’s a majority of the general fund expenditures.”

McKellar thanked Rome Finance Director Tony Rhinehart and the finance department for the work they put in to prepare the annual comprehensive financial report as well as getting ready for the audit.

“We tend to ask a lot of questions and ask for a lot of information,” he said. So, there’s a lot of work that goes into that that, often times, people don’t see. They just see the final product.”
